To celebrate 90 years of Alvar Aalto’s iconic vase, Iittala with the help of Introoutro imagined a temporary pavilion at Ofelia Plads during 3 Days of Design. Taking the vase’s iconic profile and extruding it skyward, the seven-meter-tall structure invites visitors inside the form itself.
We developed and fabricated the pavilion in close collaboration with Iittala, Introoutro and Hydro, who produced a series of custom aluminium profiles specifically for the structure. The pavilion was designed as a collection of prefabricated modules, allowing the entire structure to be assembled on site in just 48 hours. A crane was used to hoist the massive modules into position.
Inside, the Aalto collection becomes part of the architecture itself. Custom lighting fixtures incorporate Iittala vases as diffusers, while an oculus at the centre of the structure draws light into the space and reinforces the connection between the pavilion and the original form.
Designed as a temporary installation, the pavilion was dismantled 3 days after completion. The modular construction allows it to continue its journey beyond Copenhagen, with the pavilion now on its way to Helsinki.
